Parque Arqueológico Kaminaljuyú
The Parque Arqueologico Kaminaljuyu contains the remnants of one of the very first important Maya cities. Anyone interested in Maya ruins should come see this fascinating sight located about four kilometers from the center of the city.
Palacio Nacional de la Cultura
Located on the northern section of the Parque Central, the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura is a presidential palace. It was constructed between 1936 and 1943 while General Jorge Ubico was dictator and built by his prisoners who were forced to do the job.
The Parque Central, officially called the Plaza de la Constitución, is a great place to start if you are a tourist new in town and want to see the area’s wonders. It was once a plaza used by the military for exercises and military ceremonies.
Mapa en Relieve
The Mapa en Relieve is a very large open air map depicting the country of Guatemala on a 1:10,000 scale. It is a fascinating way to see what the city consists of and it is located along the Parque Minerva.
Mercado Central was once a market for local people to shop at, but that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1976. When rebuilt, it became a place to sell beautiful Guatemalan handicrafts like textiles, wooden carvings, metalwork, pottery, baskets at very reasonable prices. Come here to get lots of goodies to take back home.
