The Dominican Republic is a beautiful island in the Caribbean and if you are visiting Santiago, be sure to enjoy the following things:
El Museo del Tabaco
The Tobacco Museum is where you can lean all about cigar making. See the process from when the tobacco leaf is cut to the cigar being rolled. The museum is located in a former Victorian cigar warehouse and has exhibits featuring tools used to form the cigars, as well as old pictures.
Calle del Sol
If you like shopping for bargains, don’t miss going to the Calle del Sol, one of the town’s most interesting streets. You can find all kinds of items from handicrafts to larimar, a blue, semi-precious stone only found in the Dominican Republic.
The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration
The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration overlooks the city and was built by Trujillo, who wanted to honor himself, but when his regime fell it was renamed. There are murals on it painted by the famous artist from Spain, José Vela Zanetti.
Go on a horse-drawn carriage ride
If you want to experience some romance with your sweetie and see all the beautiful Victorian and Spanish colonial architecture along the way, then take a ride in a horse drawn carriage. You can see the Catedral Santiago Apóstol, which was constructed during the late 19th century, as well as the Centro de Recreo, where Santiago’s high society used to gather.
El Centro León
If you like contemporary art, come to El Centro León on Avenida 27 de Febrero to view old and new Dominican artwork. There are exhibits on traditional life on the island, as well as classes and workshops the public can attend.
